Read below to see how positive test results in Rheumatoid Arthritis Vaccine is paving the way for long term applications.
A breakthrough therapeutic treatment to “Prevent” the causes of rheumatoid arthritis has passed initial testing. Up until this point “Current therapies only treat the symptoms and slow the progression of the disease,” says Professor Ranjeny Thomas of the University of Queensland Diamantina Institute.
Inflammation, pain, and physical deformities are the result of your body attacking it’s own healthy tissue in this autoimmune disease.
These initial tests showed the treatment to be safe for application in suppressing the immune system response. Resulting in preventative care rather than treatment alone.
One injection of the patients immune-modified dendritic cells resulted in reduced inflammation.
While tests show great signs, researchers will look to establish a better means of distribution. “At this stage, the technique would not be ideal for widespread treatment or prevention of rheumatoid arthritis because it’s costly and time-consuming,” adds Thomas.
“However, the promising results of this trial lay the foundations for the development of a more cost-effective, clinically-practical vaccine technology that could deliver similar outcomes for patients.”
With the development of more cost-effective delivery technology, this would pave the way for treatment use in other autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes.
